sigma six methodology: Six Sigma is a highly disciplined process that helps us focus on developing and delivering near-perfect products and services.  Why ”Sigma“?  The word is a statistical term that measures how far a given process deviates from perfection. The central idea behind Six Sigma is that if you can measure how many “defects” you have in a process, you can systematically figure out how to eliminate them and get as close to “zero defects” as possible.

What is Six Sigma ?

Six Sigma is a Process Improvement Methodology aming -

Reducing defects to a rate of 3.4 defects per million defect opportunities.

Identifying & eliminating causes of variations in business processes

Using statistical processes

Focusing of a very clear understanding of customer requirements / voice of customer.

Focus on causes of Variations:

From SS view point ,a business process is normally represented in terms of  Y = f (X's)

where output (Y) is determined by some input variables (X's)

If we know that there is a relationship between x & y, we must collect & analyze data to prove our hypothesis. To change the results, we need to focus on identifying & controlling the causes instead of checking the outcome. If this is not done we are focusing our efforts on NVA (non value adding ) activities like inspection, testing & reworking.

Six Sigma Level

Sigma means standard deviation So, six sigma means six times the standard deviation.

Objective of Six Sigma is only 3.4 defects (errors) out of every million defect opportunities i.e 99.9997% perfection.

Difference between 99.0% & 99.9997%

                                     99.00%         99.9997%

Dilevery Target 30,000     29700            29999.91

Defects              300                0.09

Six Sigma Principles

Customer Focus - Top priority

Data - and - fact driven

Process Focus

- Designing of product,

- Designing of service,

- Improving effeciency

Root cause analysis (RCA)

Pro - Active Management

- Continual improvent

- Preventive Action

Boundaryless Collaboration - Cross functional

- Eliminates competition in groups - working for common cause

Drive for Perfection, Tolerance for failure

Setting of High Targets

Organization's Culture Change

- Six sigma is about people excellence

- Methodical approach to problem solving

- Pro-active attitude

What is DMAIC ?

DMAIC is a five-step approach for driving costly variation from manufacturing and business processes: Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control.   As the backbone of the Six Sigma methodology, DMAIC delivers sustained defect-free performance and highly competitive quality costs over the long run.

.Six Sigma Training + DMAIC Process = Breakthrough ResultsFor business leaders.

DMAIC provides a structure for improving metrics such as customer satisfaction, warranty, liability costs, in-house waste, and countless other possibilities – each business has its own metrics that are critical for success.Simply stated, the leadership team in a given business Defines which metrics are most important, Measures historical performance, Analyzes top opportunity areas for improving each metric, Improves underlying processes with targeted DMAIC projects, and supports the long term Controls identified by Six Sigma project teams.
